SAWC Board Members
for 2007-2008

Maria Wallis (Chair) is a founding member of the agency. She is a Professor and researcher and has a background in anti racism work in Canada. Her commitment and passion for the work of the agency is sincere and valuable.

Shana Almeida (Vice Chair) has a background in anti racism work and a degree in Social work. She is dedicated, honest and energetic. Her commitment to SAWC is unstinting and supportive. Shana has an MSW and brings a world of experience that is both political and analytical.

Gayathri Sriram (Treasurer) SAWC’s treasurer is a professional and experienced financial person. Her work in the private sector, and her professional financial skills and expertise provide SAWC with a sound financial grounding. Gayathri is a real asset and has proven valuable in SAWC’s financial leadership.

Tania Hassan (Secretary) is a young, energetic woman who is committed to the issues of South Asian women. She is originally from Bangladesh and works to promote the well being of the community.

Manivillie Kanagasabapathy, young, vibrant, energetic and active chairs the fundraising committee of the board. A community leader, Manivillie is very committed to SAWC.

Thanusha Rajeswaran Has served on the SAWC board for many years as an executive committee member. She has a degree in Psychology with a certificate in advanced counsellin. She works for the City of Toronto. Tanusha has many years of experience in volunteer work at the university level and provides SAWC with honest, strong and supportive leadership.

Tsering Norzom, president of the Tibetan Women’s Association, Tsering works as a Settlement Counsellor at the Kababayyan Community Centre. Tsering has a masters degree in Political Science, and is a strong advocate for her community.

Nira Sharma has extensive experience in health and works as a Policy Advisor in health with Healthforce Ontario. An immigrant from Nepal Nira is a strong advocate for the issues related to newcomers in Canada.

Uzma Shakir, Executive Director of SALCO, is a community leader and activist. Her knowledge, experience and honesty in dealing with issues related to the community are well recognized. Uzma has received numerous awards for her work.

Raj Sabharwal has joined the board this year, but has already added value to the financial management of the agency. She is a Certified Management Accountant with significant experience in Audit and Finance, and works for the Ontario Energy Board.

Gopa Chakravarthy Has been involved with SAWC for many years. She is a Homeopathic doctor by profession. Gopa has sat on many boards and runs a non profit agency in India to help the poor people in the villages of West Bengal.
